Just as your favorite fiction story contains turning points and a midpoint, so does the narrative of your life, your project's life, or your company's life. These specific points of a larger story are what we like to call pivotal moments. While you're reading your favorite story or looking back on your life, it's probably easier to identify what the pivotal moments were. But when you're amidst experiencing them, it can be hard to know whether or not you're in one.

This is because pivotal moments actually exist in a liminal space: they live between the present—a catalyst you actually experienced, and the future—what you decide to do next. In these moments, a main character "aka you," might experience the feeling that everything is about to change, even if it's not yet known how.

Some examples of a pivotal moment are: the moment after two of your colleagues had a blowout fight at your desk but before this inspired you to become a mediator; the moment after someone gave you feedback that hurt but before you chose to ask them for more information instead of replying angrily; the moment after your TikTok went viral but before you decided to use your newfound celebrity for good. It's at these moments that decisions need to be made: how am I going to react, who am I now, who do I want to become, and in which direction do i want to go?

Pivotal moments can be something to celebrate (we reached our milestone). They can also be something to despise (i just got fired). Regardless, these moments create space where you can pause before taking action and practice not being reactionary. During this space we can consider if we want to continue following our learned patterns about money, success, and how we value our gifts, or we can choose to do something different, creating a new pathway that aligns with our highest self—grounded on this plane via our soul contract, north star, mission, vision or values.

To what extent can you safely open a new portal for yourself and others that transforms how we collectively relate to work, value, and success? How can we cultivate more abundance and shape a different future of work together by consciously choosing our direction in these moments, instead of defaulting to the status quo?

Pivotal moments can happen out of nowhere, build up over time, or be intentionally created (like posting a TikTok you knew was good that ended up changing your life). They might stem from causes outside your control—but in that situation, if you have a choice, will you decide to reinforce old patterns or open up entirely new possibilities?
